A new branch of science shows that mood can be influenced by aroma. Mr. Kiran V. Ranga, managing director at Ripple Fragrances explains how spas and hotels can tap this field

The science of aromacology says that different fragrances can create different moods in people. With health and wellness becoming such a strong lifestyle factor for many, one company has taken this science, bottled it up and is now selling it to spas and hotels.

“There have been lots of advances in thinking in terms of the impacts of odour on mood,” says Mr. Kiran V. Ranga, managing director at Ripple Fragrances Pvt Ltd, a division of NR Group, already famous for making the Cycle brand of incense sticks.

The company has a laboratory in Mysore where it blends and creates its own fragrances. This allows it to create unique, tailor-made products that can be defined by the customer. “We have both standard offerings and signature offerings. For standard offerings we just provide standardised fragrances but for signature offerings we go to our customers to understand their vision, outlook, texture and so on and then come up with an exclusive fragrance which suits their image,” said Rao.

The standard offerings include those under the IRIS brand such as the Reed Diffuser, Fragrance Vapourizer, Potpourri and Aroma Candles.

Rao says there is a huge need for developing a group of concepts which can only happen if the consumer is using it.

“Even though there is lots of interest for the signature initiatives, people are a little sceptical about how exactly it unfolds. So our initial focus is on educating and getting our products to the customers for use,” he says.

Since there is an increasing need for a wider offering of wellness products in India, with the spa concept rapidly gaining popularity, Ripple has come up with a range of wellness products for the body. The company’s philosophy is driven by ‘providing wellness solutions in spas through solutions in the air’.

“We are in the domain of fragrances where the focus is purely on the impact of fragrances on mood.  There are a whole host of products in the market which offer therapeutic benefits for skins, hair and body. But we are really looking at providing emotional gratifications through fragrances in the air and also setting different ambiences and different moods through fragrances,” Rao says.

“We are in the process of developing a range of products for the body as well. With the oiliness oil, we can get into different applications and we have different compressions of oils which offer different emotional benefits,” adds Rao.

The company is this month launching its wellness range of products under the brand name Bring Spa Home, and will be extending this in the coming years with other products.

Besides massage oils, it has other targeted oils for inhalation. “We offer only some blends now but we will come up with whole new range of blends. Another product which we will launch soon is the pillow mister. This is a product which will help consumers get good sleep at night,” says Rao.

Rao says the fragrance market size is very small in India today because it’s at a nascent stage. “The growth rate will tend to be very high because the base is very small. The product categories I am talking about are seeing tremendous growth in India. We are looking at three-star hotels and apartments,” he adds.

Ripple wants to be leader in home fragrance in India and abroad. It also markets the same kind of products to the international market with customised branding.
