Kolkata's Vedic Village estimates it will cost Rs5 crore and three months to completely recover from the unexpected arson attack on Sunday, August 23, 2009.
The resort was partially damaged contrary to mainline media reporting that the entire property was gutted. The lobby took the brunt of the attack, with the thatched roof completely destroyed. Other areas that were partially damaged include two conference halls, Om 2 and 3, the games room and the library.
“It was our staff’s heroic effort which saved the library and the resort. The fire response system worked perfectly well. The moment I saw the roof on fire, I knew it had to be replaced,” said Michael Robertson, executive director and CEO, Vedic Village Spa and Resort.
Coincidentally, occupancy was also low at just 25 rooms as 90 rooms checked out a few hours before the attack.

The insurers, National Insurance Company, completed their survey on Thursday, August 26, 2009, after which the resort began its clean up and restoration work. Their report is expected next week.
The entire property, which spans 150 acres and includes the Vedic Village Homes and the resort is insured for Rs35 crore. However, the property is not insured for loss of business.
At present, Vedic Village is completely closed for business. Bookings have been cancelled and guests walked to other hotels. Robertson estimates it will take another 10 days to partially open the property. Renovations will be done in phases. The priority is putting up a temporary lobby roof and replacing the EPBAX and IDS terminals, FF&E and local handicrafts.
“We are brainstorming on using new materials for the roof which was built in 2004. It makes sense to use the opportunity positively, It should take us three months in all,” said Robertson.
In a show of good faith to the staff, the management has paid the entire August salary in advance and will also pay out the Durga Puja bonus soon.
