The Dusit Thani in Bangkok stands out for its devotion to Thai interiors, and its aura of regal serenity amid the hustle and bustle of the city’s madding crowds, says Punam Mohandas.

The Dusit Thani is located on Rama IV road in Bangkok; extremely well connected to both the sky train and the MRT, surrounded by shopping plazas and eating joints.

Nonetheless, the hotel itself is a haven of peace, from the moment you enter the spacious lobby, until you are whisked off to your comfortably-appointed room.

The Majesty Suite on the 21st floor, lives up to its name. With an area of around 320-square metres, it is almost ten times bigger than a regular hotel room.

Spacious and well appointed, the interplay of colours in the interior fitments creates an impression of regal opulence.

Guests who have stayed in the suite have much appreciated the Thai essence in the ambience, which is apparent right from the lovingly polished Thai teakwood floors to sprigs of colourful orchids.

Tradition and local culture play an important role in the suite, which has been designed by P49 Co. Ltd. Gracious Benjarong (porcelain in five-coloured designs) artefacts and silk paintings are cleverly highlighted across the rooms.

The living room has two big sofas with cream Thai silk covers, contrasting with the silver grey chair beside the wood cabinet, which houses a big screen TV. Elegant, silver grey silk curtains are offset by polished metal elephants that flank vases of colourful, exotic orchids.

In contrast, the bedroom is simplistic in appearance, but no less royal in its fitment. Gold worked panels, maroon cushions, and Thai bolsters add subtle nuances to the room.

Behind the headboard of the bed is a canopied space that showcase a pair of beautifully carved wooden dragons; inherently traditional, they are said to bring good luck and blessings.
Celebrities who stayed at the suite include the likes of Dasho Sangay Wangchuk of Bhutan, Whitney Houston, Andy Roddick, and our very own Amitabh Bachchan, who stayed here during IIFA 2008. And yes – the bed length was just fine.
