Highlighting the tourism potential of the eastern and north-eastern sectors, the Confederation of Indian Industry–Eastern Region, along with the West Bengal Tourism Department, plans to organise a two-day conference in Kolkata January 28 and 29.
The official hospitality partner for the event is The Oberoi Grand Kolkata. With the western world hit by recession, the Oberoi Group is looking at south-east Asian markets to grow their business in the leisure segment. “We were looking at developing newer markets and, since I am on the tourism committee of CII, we thought it would be an ideal opportunity to showcase our product as well as the destination, to prospective buyers. The Oberoi Grand is increasingly being chosen as the preferred hotel by leisure travellers to this part of India,” said Aditya Shamsher Malla, director sales, The Oberoi Grand, Kolkata.
This is the first ever initiative of its kind in Eastern India. The buyer-seller meet will see CII marketing and promoting the regions of West Bengal, Orissa, Darjeeling, Sikkim and Assam, to Thailand, Malaysia and Singapore. In spite of the great connectivity and accessibility from Kolkata, these countries have typically thus far seen only a one-way traffic, which The Oberoi Group and CII hope to change in the near future.
