Sujit Banerjee to Japan: We go back thousands of years, more are welcome

India's MoT has reached out to friendly Japan, one of our top 10 tourist sources, for higher inbound numbers.

A special UNWTO Symposium on Encouraging Tourism Exchange was held in Delhi today with an aim to advance tourism between India and Japan. In his opening remarks, tourism secretary Sujit Banerjee leveraged common aspects between the two countries such as Buddhism (Whose circuits here the MoT is enhancing).

Recession aside, Japanese tourists have been coming to India in steadily increasingly numbers. Japan is already one of the top 10 source markets which the MoT is encouraging it to increase. "People-to-people exchanges have been further enhanced through joint collaboration in India’s revival of the Nalanda University as a regional centre of learning and the establishment of a Chair on Indian Studies at the University of Tokyo. During the recently concluded Buddhist Conclave held in Nalanda in Bihar, a delegation from Japan comprising Tour operators, Media members and Buddhist Scholars actively participated in the programme," said Banerjee.

The Japanese delegation included Masashi Mizukami, minister and deuty chief of mission, Embassy of Japan in India, Yuichiro Honda, chief UNWTO regional support office for Asia and the Pacific & President of APTEC, and Hiroshi Tabata, director general, regional development department, Japan Tourism Agency (JTA) along with 100 participants for the day long symposium.

Indian hospitality and travel was represented by the IATO, TAAI, TAFI, HAI, FHRAI and ATOAI.
