Pune has a new kid on the block; the Westin Pune Koregaon Park, on the banks of the river Mulla Mutha, which opened in December. Punam Mohandas takes a closer look at the property.

At 44-sqare metres, it is safe to say that the Westin rooms are large. A further intention to maximise the concept of space means there is a full-height glazing between bedroom and bathroom, and vestibule and bathroom, that allows space to visually flow freely. A discreetly placed, motorised blind ensures desired levels of privacy at all times.

The concept was to work with a palette of natural materials and colours, with key accent fabrics adopting colourways that emphasise the theme of ‘Botanicals’; one of Westin’s key identifiers.

These accents are set against a predominantly neutral but warm background, so that they have maximum impact without being visually overpowering. The room’s other key accents come from the combined use of walnut and zebrano veneers, both selected for the degree of contrast in their grain, so that the look of natural wood is unmistakable. The furniture is clean and contemporary and shuns decorative carving in favour of calm, minimal lines.

The bathrooms are finished in Turkish and Italian marble, which speak closely to the background palette of the main bedroom, again enhancing the visual flow between the two spaces. One can choose to soak in the freestanding tub while watching the widescreen TV in the bedroom or enjoying the view through the window beyond.

The study desk incorporates a versatile, movable desktop which can deploy to suit the guest’s needs – fully stowed to maximise the open space in the room, or adjusted to offer a more generous working space facing either the large picture window or the wide-screen TV.

Unlike cramped spaces offered by most five-star hotels, this area in the room is not only functional but exceedingly comfortable.
