Sadly, world over fire related accidents have taken thousands of lives and damaged property in the most tragic and dreadful way. The most common cause of fire accidents in apartments/commercial complexes happens due to lack of knowledge and awareness, our attitude to take safety lightly, limitations in law enforcement or non-compliance to the law and other such reasons are the main causes for recurrence of fire accidents in general.

Fires can be caused from extinguishing cigarettes improperly, overloading electrical wires, sparks from wood burning in the fireplace, faulty electrical appliances, etc. Preventing fires from starting in the first place is an important safety goal.

Designing a building to ensure minimal risk or to meet a prescribed level of safety from fire is more complex than just the simple consideration of what building materials will be used in construction of the building.

Therefore, today buildings are designed in such a way that fire can be contained in particular areas which has been possible by the use of new technologies in the field. The most important aspect is the maintenance to the essential fire safety measures provided in the building.

Few basics preventive measures, which contribute to safety and security, can be termed as:
1. Windows and doors
These openings are to allow people to escape or to provide access for fire fighters to evacuate people – various products are widely used so that buildings can be made safe from the fearful incident of fire, and in this situation the first thing comes in mind, is the safety of human lives.
2. Alarm Systems
Smoke detectors and fire alarm systems are essential to warn people and cause them to evacuate.
3. Safe Passageways
Exits such as corridors and stairs to remain clear and allow people to evacuate safely.

Architects and builders need to ensure that such safety measures are positioned in every building they design and build because you never know where and when a fire tragedy is going to strike.
