The conference tackled issues around safety, security and threats within the hospitality industry,

It was a gathering of like-minded folk at the Fire and Security summit held on 26th and 27th August, 2010 at Intercontinental Eros, Nehru Place New Delhi organised by the Fire and Safety Association of India (FSAI). The event also had an exhibition of fire safety products with such participants as Kirloskar Brothers and Schneider Electric who were also platinum partners in the event.

Among those who gave presentations at the summit were Ron George, president of Ron George Design and Consulting Services who spoke on the NFPA Code - Tall Hotels Buildings and presented a case study presentation on the World Trade Centre with design features of NFPA 13/14/20. This was followed by a presentation by Professor VK Paul, HOD - School of Planning and Architecture. Others who presented were Bikramjeet Kukreja, Gurdeep Bains, Shamim Rasid-Sumar, Geoffrey Harris and Robert Dodge. They created awareness among those present with topics such as designing fire safe buildings and fire safety in general.

Magnetic Auto Controls, Pentair Water India, Tyco Fire Suppression and Building Products, Firepro Systems Private Limited, Zicom Electronic Security System and System Sensor supported FSAI by undertaking partnerships on various accounts. Gurdeep Bains, vice president Global Asset Protection, East Hemisphere spoke on managing large complex security. This was followed by a presentation on ‘Fire and Life Safety Aspects in Burj Khalifa’ by Shamim Rasid-Sumar, PE, LEED, director of Middle East Hemisphere Operations.

Rolf Jensen and Associates Inc, Dubai, UAE spoke on compartmentalisation through fire and smoke curtains under future trends by Geoffrey Harris, consultant, UK and Robert Dodge, CPP - vice president, West Region, Pinkerton Consulting
and Investigation.

On both the days there was a panel discussion on topics like integration of fire and security systems for better efficiency and fire accidents & terrorist attacks – lessons learnt where people like Brigadier JL Cruz, VSM – chief security officer, The Oberoi Group, SK Dheri, managing director, DLF Services, Colonel Rajesh Bains, Chief Security Officer – ITC Hotel The Maurya and Colonel Virendra Chandrawat, SM, head of security & safety, DLF Malls, Sandeep Goel, director – Spectral Services Consultants, Nikkhil Krishen, CEO – Nityrti Associates and Gulshan Khurana, CEO – Fyprotek, all shared their views and perspectives.

Among those who attended were RC Sharma, director general, Delhi Fire service, Aruna Bhauguna, director general fire and Emergency Services, Andhra Pradesh, AK Sharma chief fire officer, Delhi fire service, Scientist from National Informatics Centre and a cross section of professionals from the Oberoi Group, Le Meridian, Hyatt, Starwood Hotels and Resorts, Pullman Hotels and Resorts, Eros Group, HILTI, ITC Welcome Group, Today Hotel, Cairn, HSBC, DDA, New Zealand High Commission, Holistic HR and Security, G4S Security Services (I), Accenture, World Health Organization, International Recreation Parks along with architects and renowned consultants from the industry and other institutions connected directly or indirectly with fire and safety.

Rakesh Arora, FSAI Delhi Chapter president, mentioned in his speech that they intend to conduct many such events, technology meets and workshops with the support of all present.

He touched upon the fact that fire safety was a matter of concern globally and that more people have grown conscious of its importance, leading to a demand for the highest standards.

Arora also drew attention to the fact that the hospitality industry is one area where safety and security are major concerns. Gulshan Khurana, FSAI Delhi Chapter Secretary summarised by urging all present to keep in mind the suggestions of the eminent speakers when designing buildings.
