Marriott’s Cluster Synergy Meeting for Engineering Directors

15 directors of engineering from Marriott International’s Mumbai and Pune regions recently attended a Cluster Synergy Meeting, which was conducted in Westin Koregaon Park, Pune. Talking about the need to establish this knowledge session, S Saravana Raj, area director of engineering, South Asia for Marriott International said, “While Marriott organises an annual engineering conference on a bigger scale, this kind of smaller meetings ensures more personalised and interactive discussions amongst engineers with on-the-spot decisions.”
Since hotels face many similar kind of problems, this meeting acted as a platform where participants could share good practices of a particular property, which the remainder could emulate. Explaining this further, Raj said, “There are many common problems that hotels face, and we discussed innovative product enhancement at this forum, which could benefit all our hotels.”
Similarly, he added that given the volume of hotels, there is always some scope for getting the most viable cost for some contracts or procurements. “This forum helped us to consolidate our individual needs and put forward vendors in various areas like power purchase, annual contracts and regular consumables,” he said.
Talking about experience at this event, Nasir Sheikh, general manager of Westin Pune said, ‘The backbone to a successful hotel is the engineering team, be it the internal organs (machines) or the beautiful image that the guest sees and experiences; the engineering team is the driver for all of it. As an engineer at heart, seeing over 15 brilliant minds in a room working towards a common goal and sharing insights and ideas on how we can continue to improve, was amazing. This is the beauty of Marriott and its leadership, the constant drive and endeavor to continue being the best.”
Adding to this, Mahantesh, director of engineering, JW Marriott, Pune stated, “This is a great initiative that integrated all the brand’s engineers in a meaningful way to understand how each of us are operating our hotels and later comparing it with others. The initiative also opened up doors for learning from each other’s best practices and showed us where opportunities exist for saving costs as well as improving guest satisfaction level.”
Following the success of this initiative, the second leg of the Cluster Synergy Meeting was held for engineering heads of Bangalore and Kochi market on 27th July, 2018. It will be followed a session for the Delhi and Jaipur teams in August 2018. The ideas derived from this meeting will be implemented by hotels, in some cases with the help of Subject Matter Experts of various disciplines.
