Power List 2017, Nirupa Shankar, Director, Brigade Hospitality Services

Female entrepreneurs and industry leaders often face varied challenges. But Nirupa Shankar knows how to squash them at every turn. Female entrepreneurs and industry leaders often face varied challenges. But Nirupa Shankar knows how to squash them at every turn. Firstly, she believes that business comes first, and gender later. And once you start believing it, you start projecting it and everything else starts falling in place. More or less.  A hands-on person in the operational side of the business, she is constantly seeking ways to improve operational efficiencies. And she found that the best way to do this is by leveraging technology and engaging more people in this effort. In 2016, she initiated an accelerator programme for startups, called Real Estate Accelerator Programme (REAP) with her company becoming a pilot customer for this project. The objective was to get startups to develop B2B technology for the real estate sector, which was scalable, sustainable and also help these startups to further market their products to a larger customer base. To give these startups a level playing field, Brigade will also invest in shortlisted companies that make the mark and are inducted into the programme. When the programme was launched, close to 100-odd companies applied to it. Coming to its hospitality business, the Bengaluru-based Brigade Hospitality Services is working with major global hospitality chains to expand its project pipeline and add more rooms and properties to its build portfolio. According to various reports, it plans to build about 2,000 rooms through more than 10 properties by 2020. Of these three are under various stages of development in Bengaluru and Kochi.By Vinita Bhatia
