The Leela Gandhinagar, Gujarat, Gandhinagar railway station

The Gandhinagar railway station which is being completely redeveloped by the Indian Railways will soon have a five-star hotel coming up above its tracks.  According to reports, the upcoming five-star property will be run by the Leela Group and is likely to be completed by December 2020. Post completion, The Leela Gandhinagar will be the first luxury hotel in the country to be constructed at the airspace of a conventional railway station. The said hotel will be built 25 meters above ground.

The upcoming Leela Gandhinagar will have three wings of ten floors and two wings of eight floors and will boast 300 spacious guest rooms and suites, two extraordinary restaurants, an elaborate lounge and boardroom, and 800 sq. meters of flexible meetings, conventions and event space. The entire Gandhinagar station will have three towers that will give the impression of petals from an aerial view. The Leela Gandhinagar will be located 400 meters from the Mahatma Mandir Convention and Exhibition Center. The environmentally-responsible complex is spacious enough to handle up to 15000 people, and includes a Convention Hall boasting seating capacity of 6000 people as well as state-of-the-art Exhibition Centers, hi-tech Conference Halls and Seminar Rooms, among a wide-array of features.

This unique hotel is said to be designed in a way that no vibrations or noise from the trains on the track below will be felt by the hotel guests. Shedding details on the construction of the hotel, VK Yadav, Chairman Railway Board said that they have allowed for the pillars to come on the tracks to form the ceiling which will allow for the hotel to be constructed on top. The whole objective behind this project is to provide world-class facilities and experience to passengers without the national transporter having to spend money, added Yadav.

Once refurbished, the Gandhinagar railway station building will have concourse areas that will consist of retail shops, food courts etc for the comfort of passengers. A dedicated transit hall will be made to seat as many as 600 passengers. The Gandhinagar railway station is being redeveloped by a Special Purpose Vehicle (SPV) – Gandhinagar Railway & Urban Development Corporation Ltd (GARUD) – between IRSDC and the Gujarat state government.

On April 1, 2018, The Leela Palaces Hotels and Resorts signed the management contract with Gandhinagar Railway and Urban Development Corporation (GARUD).
