While layoffs became a sad reality during the pandemic, Varun Chhibber ensured zero retrenchment at The Leela Ambience Gurugram Hotels & Residences. He initiated the ‘FEST’ concept based on flexibility, empathy, safety, security and trust.
“The idea was to have a trained internal talent pool, which was readily available to manage busier operational needs. In addition to making our associates all-rounders, it had a significant positive impact on the extra-contractual manpower cost,” the General Manager
noted.
The pandemic posed several challenges related to cash flow and expense management along with affiliated issues. However, the team bandied together to initiate multiple projects that would refurbish the hotel and provide long-term benefits.
For instance, while the installation of smart LED lights throughout the unit involved INR 5 crore investment, in the long run this would reduce HLP costs. Chhibber recalled how initiating such projects during tough times was unthinkable. “However, we focussed on what we did best and kept adding to it,” he added.
