Award-winning movie ‘Ustad Hotel’ – a chef’s emotional journey – back in theatres

The underlying message in the film - "anyone can fill the stomach but only a good cook can fill the heart as well" - is apparently beautifully captured.

The 2012 film ‘Ustad Hotel’, starring Dulquer Salmaan in the lead role, is all set to make a grand comeback on the big screen!

PVR INOX theaters will re-release the movie on January 3, 2025, a move officially announced by PVR Theaters on their social media.

In an Instagram post, they shared, “When passion meets tradition, the flavors of success come alive! Relive Faizi’s emotional journey on the big screen once again! Re-releasing at PVR INOX on Jan 3!”

Directed by Anwar Rasheed, written by Anjali Menon, and produced by Listin Stephen, Ustad Hotel is a cherished Malayalam-language drama that beautifully weaves themes of family, passion, and tradition. The story follows Faizal, or Faizi (Dulquer Salmaan), a young man pursuing his dream of becoming a chef in Switzerland, defying his father’s (Siddique) expectations. When his father discovers Faizi’s plans to work in the UK, he confiscates his passport, forcing him to stay in India. Left with no choice, Faizi begins working in his grandfather Karim’s (Thilakan) humble restaurant in Kozhikode, where life takes an unexpected turn.

A winner of three National Film Awards, including honors for its impactful storytelling, Ustad Hotel remains a cornerstone of the New-Gen cinema movement in Malayalam. The film’s universal appeal even inspired a Kannada remake, Gowdru Hotel (2017).

For fans and newcomers alike, this re-release is a perfect opportunity to revisit Faizi’s emotional journey as a chef or experience it for the first time. The underlying message in the film – “anyone can fill the stomach but only a good cook can fill the heart as well” – is apparently beautifully captured.
