What triggered your interest in the hospitality industry?
My interest in the hospitality industry began at a young age, around 13 or 14, largely influenced by my parents’ extensive travels. We had the opportunity to stay in remarkable hotels around the world, but one experience that stood out back home in Ireland is a small, family-run establishment called Kelly’s Resort in South-West Ireland. I always admired the proprietor’s hands-on approach to hospitality and care for associates, exemplifying warm Irish service and a culture of ‘never say no’. Fast forward over 30 years, and I find myself leading hotels in a larger, yet similarly values-driven organization – Marriott International. Our brand’s commitment remains consistent: Prioritize our associates and, in turn, they will take exceptional care of our guests and the business.

Tell us a little about your career journey until now… how did you start and what are some key milestones?
I have had the privilege of working with Marriott International for over 25 years, with experiences spanning various locations across Europe, the Middle East, Africa, and now India. Beginning my career in Sales, I have progressed through several roles, including Multi-property Hotel Manager in Dubai. Each position has uniquely shaped my journey, but I hold a special fondness for my current role as General Manager of JW Marriott Prestige Golfshire Resort and Spa.
Reflecting on my beginnings as a ‘Voyager’ graduate trainee in our central London hotels, I recognize that this experience laid the foundation for my career success. Marriott International has provided me with numerous opportunities to advance both in the industry and within the company, supporting my growth every step of the way.

What are some of the challenges you face as a General Manager of a hotel, and how do you go about resolving them?
Throughout my career, I have encountered numerous challenges; however, in my current role, I am fortunate to work alongside a team of passionate and dedicated leaders. One of my primary focuses is to retain and nurture our associates’ skills to foster growth within Marriott. I firmly believe that emphasizing individual strengths is crucial to overcoming challenges. By strategically placing team members in roles where they can excel, we create a supportive environment that promotes success for both associates and the organization.

Your strategies to ensure guests keep coming back?
Establishing a personal connection with each guest is paramount, especially in the luxury segment of our market. I advocate for addressing guest complaints directly and with sincerity. Often, some of my most meaningful relationships with guests have emerged from resolving relatively minor issues. By fostering open communication and genuine connections, we can enhance the overall guest experience and encourage repeat visits.

Your advice to aspiring GMs?
My advice to aspiring general managers is to leverage your strengths while remaining mindful of areas for improvement. Just as the best batsmen recognize they cannot be all-rounders; successful leaders understand the importance of honing specific skills while also seeking growth opportunities. Continuous self-awareness and development are key to excelling in this dynamic industry.
