“We intend to achieve net-zero status by 2050″: Nikhil Sharma of Radisson

Nikhil Sharma, Managing Director and Area Senior Vice President, South Asia, Radisson Hotel Group, spotlights Radisson's sustainability goals for India...

The hospitality industry’s role in tackling global warming: This industry, with its substantial consumption of energy, water, and other resources, has a considerable environmental impact which can be significantly lowered by adopting eco-friendly practices such as energy-efficient technologies, waste reduction programs, and water conservation measures. Not only do these actions help mitigate climate change, but they also align with the growing demand from consumers for greener and more responsible business operations.

Radisson’s environmental sustainability goals: Radisson Hotel Group is steadfast in its commitment to environmental sustainability, aligning our goals with the Think People, Planet, and Community principles. Our targets are grounded in scientific validation through the Science Based Targets initiative, reinforcing our dedication to becoming a Net Zero company by 2050. We intend to adhere to the Glasgow Declaration and achieve net-zero status by 2050.
RHG is dedicated to enhancing energy efficiency and reducing our carbon footprint through advanced measures such as energy-efficient lighting, optimized heating and cooling, and smart technologies, exemplified by the energy-efficient chiller and 100% LED lights. We are accelerating our transition to renewable energy via on-site generation and procurement partnerships, aiming to halve our carbon footprint by 2030.
Our commitment to sustainability includes 100% carbon-neutral events, equipping our hotels with EV chargers, and implementing innovative technologies. We eliminate single-use plastics, repurpose used cooking oil, and run programs like Soap for Hope, Linen for Life, and Flush Me Not. We promote sustainable practices and community engagement by engaging in initiatives like Pathway to Net Positive Hospitality and Hotel Sustainability Basics. Our mandatory Leading and Living Responsible Business training program, available in 20 languages, ensures all employees are equipped to implement sustainable practices daily.

Environmental certifications and the roadmap to reach there: Environmental certifications are vital for hotels as they validate our commitment to sustainable practices and reassure our guests and stakeholders of our dedication to environmental responsibility. Radisson Hotel Group is pursuing three key strategies to attain its Net Zero objectives. These strategies include eco-friendly building practices, including eco-certified structures with leading certifications such as LEED, BREEAM, and EDGE; a complete shift to 100% renewable energy sources; and a transition to electrification. In the case of electrification, hotel owners are provided with guidance and recommendations for investment in the replacement of fossil fuels, such as gas, with electrified alternatives, like heat pumps, which can be powered by renewable energy sources.
We prioritize certifications like the IGBC (Indian Green Building Council), which recognizes our hotels for sustainable design and operations, exemplified by Radisson Blu Nagpur, Radisson Blu Ahmedabad, and Radisson Blu Indore.
We further remain committed to Hotel Sustainability Basics, which is a globally recognized set of sustainability indicators that should be followed by all hotels as a minimum standard. This year, our objective is to ensure all Radisson Hotels are HSB-verified.
