As Area General Manager for Marriott, could you walk us through your key responsibilities and how you manage multiple properties under your purview?

Overseeing a portfolio of 17 hotels across nine cities in India, my primary responsibilities include providing strategic input to hotel leaders, collaborating with various stakeholders to add business value, and establishing processes for transitioning hotels from franchise to fully managed properties. A key focus is maintaining a strong review and feedback mechanism to ensure each hotel retains its competitive edge, which helps to continuously improve operations and guest satisfaction.

A significant part of my role involves working closely with the leadership teams at each property to drive operational excellence, business growth and uphold Marriott’s brand standards. I believe in a hands-on management style, empowering teams to foster a culture of collaboration, innovation, and accountability. Managing such a diverse portfolio also requires a strategic focus on resource allocation, market positioning, team development and sustainability ensuring all properties perform at their best while meeting financial and business targets.

What are the key challenges you face in overseeing such a large and diverse portfolio of hotels?

In managing a diverse portfolio, my primary focus is leading change in an ever-evolving business landscape. It is crucial to identify both risks and opportunities, allowing us to stay agile and ahead of the competition. By supporting our hotel leaders, I work closely with them to manage conflicting priorities effectively, ensuring that short-term decisions align with our long-term vision for value creation.

Through scenario planning, we continuously develop strategies for various potential future situations and position our properties for success. Further, we also ensure that our guests continue to receive the high standards they expect from us, keeping both financial performance and guest satisfaction at the forefront.

Could you give us an overview of the partnership between Marriott and SAMHI? What strategic benefits do you see from this collaboration for both?

We are excited about the collaboration between Marriott International and SAMHI hotels. Both entities share a growth-oriented vision and this partnership fosters an environment of sustainable development.

Furthermore, SAMHI has a long-standing relationship with Marriott and the transition of the six hotels further strengthens this rapport. We are very excited about the prospects of these hotels as they reposition, taking advantage of Marriott’s strong management capabilities.

Could you share the key motivations behind transitioning six SAMHI-owned properties from franchise operations to fully managed entities? How does this move align with Marriott’s long-term strategy in India?

This transition aligns with Marriott’s broader business objectives in India by expanding its managed portfolio in strategic markets, allowing for greater operational excellence and reinforcing its brand presence. The hotels reach a wide and diverse audience, enhancing their visibility, robust management capabilities, and extensive global sales and distribution channels.

This transition is a strategic step that aligns with Marriott’s long-term growth objectives in India. The addition of these six properties strengthens Marriott’s cluster approach, creating economies of scale while tapping into its loyal customer base, including over 210 million Marriott Bonvoy members, which will support both business and leisure travellers.

What are the key improvements or enhancements guests can expect at these newly managed properties? How will Marriott’s global standards and expertise be reflected in the guest experience now that these properties are fully under your management?

All six hotels are undergoing upgrades to align with Marriott’s international operational standards. This includes enhancements in service quality, guest room design and facility upgrades to provide a consistent, memorable experience for all guests. These renovations aim to boost the competitive positioning of the properties by meeting the expectations of global travellers and ensuring superior comfort and innovation. The properties will also benefit from Marriott’s global expertise, sales, and distribution channels.

Guests at these hotels will enjoy enhanced benefits and offerings under Marriott Bonvoy, Marriott International’s award-winning travel programme and marketplace, which give members access to transformative, eye-opening experiences around the corner and across the globe. Marriott Bonvoy’s portfolio of more than 30 extraordinary hotel brands offers renowned hospitality in the most memorable destinations in the world.

With this strategic shift, how does Marriott plan to incorporate sustainability practices at these fully managed properties?  Can we expect to see new sustainability initiatives introduced under Marriott’s management?

Over the next year, these fully managed properties will adopt Marriott International’s comprehensive sustainability practices, with a focus on reducing environmental impact. This includes efforts to minimise water usage, waste, and carbon emissions across all operations as well as renewable energy use.

In line with Marriott’s broader sustainability goals, we plan to implement several key initiatives. These include responsibly sourcing the majority of products in our top ten priority categories, achieving a large share of local sourcing of produce and supplier requirements, reducing water intensity and ensuring that a minimum amount of electricity comes from renewable sources. Through these efforts, we aim to integrate sustainability into every aspect of our operations, contributing to both environmental stewardship and long-term business success.
