To be the undisputed Hospitality Advisory Business Leader in South Asia is Mandeep Lamba’s vision for JLL and he is well on the way to making it a reality. With revenues at JLL having grown by over 300% in the last four years, it is now the ‘go-to firm” for Transaction Advisory and has established itself as the leader in hospitality investment sales business.
From a non-consulting background, having set up and run hotel companies, Lamba brought actual learnings and a fresh perspective to the consulting and advisory work.
Not one to steer clear of risks, he believes that, “quitting a well-settled top-rated position to set up a start-up was the biggest risk I have ever taken.” He admits, “The high point of my career was when I was appointed President, ITC Fortune Hotels in 2001, at the age of 38. I spent five years there subsequently, building and growing the company.”
Intuitive to the core, Lamba analyses the hospitality industry thus, “This sector is still to mature, given the size of the country, its population and its growing stature in the global economy. Rapid development is taking place and India is urbanising speedily, with projects such as smart cities, highways infrastructure, new airport developments and expansion, modernisation of railways and the technology boom. The hospitality sector will witness exponential growth over the next few
decades. Besides the traditional hotels, disruptive models of Air BnB and OYO will only add to the opportunities and growth of this sector.”
Knowledge, a positive outlook and constant industry updates keep Lamba going. “The industry is going through very rapid changes which requires constant rethinking of traditional business models and service standards, given the technology
revolution disrupting almost all traditional businesses. This requires industry leaders to be voracious readers and to regularly debate trends and opportunities with their peers and teams.”
While he is passionate about his work and gives it his all, he is a firm believer in work-life balance. Lamba says, “I advocate this to all members of my team and to my industry colleagues too. We need to work real hard and play real hard. Our families are the most precious belongings that we all have and we should never take them for granted. I love spending time with my family and close friends and plan short or long vacations with them whenever possible. These keep me rejuvenated and energised at all times.”
