The real estate business is a high-risk one at most times and that is perhaps why Anuj Puri likes to be a part of it. A real estate expert, risk-taking comes naturally to Puri. He says, “One of the calculated risks I took was merging the company I had started with an international property consultancy.”
Puri is certainly among the most reverentially talked about real estate specialists in India. With over 27 years of experience in multi-disciplinary advisory and transactions in real estate, he is known for his expertise in planning, undertaking demand assessment studies and transactional services, including marketing strategies based on technical real estate market analysis.
By partnering with HVS to form HVS ANAROCK, he has taken the entire hospitality consultancy spectrum — from brokerage, feasibility studies and appraisals to land sourcing and operator searches to the next level in India and throughout South Asia. Puri avers, “HVS ANAROCK is a veritable dream team formed by the perfect symbiotic relationship of global and local expertise.”
Always striving to raise industry standards, Puri admits modestly, “I think my biggest contribution to the industry is the fact that I have been fighting on the side which demanded greater transparency and accountability for the sector. I firmly believe that Indian real estate has endless potential, but we need to rise to international standards of accountability, governance and ethics.”
Few can match his business acumen. and spotting an opportunity and translating that into success is what he does effortlessly. “Leaving the international property consultancy I was Chairman of for over a decade and starting ANAROCK, which has now partnered with HVS, was not a risk but a carefully calculated move geared for success,” he analyses. The vibrant hospitality industry in India, he opines, has been witnessing unprecedented growth over the past few years due to several factors, including the burgeoning middle-class, overall infrastructure development, increase in foreign tourists and the provision of e-Tourist visa to nearly 164 countries.
Keeping an ear to the ground, he believes, is the best way to stay abreast of the Industry. “I participate in as many credible industry discussions as possible. No matter how accomplished one is, no one is an island and nobody stays ahead of the curve without constantly learning from others.”
He draws inspiration from great people and the energy of the city of Mumbai spurs him on. “This city has a backbone of pure steel. If ever a city has personified survival instinct, it is Mumbai.”
A self-confessed workaholic, Puri makes it a point to spend time with his family and travel with them, as he realises the importance of work-life balance. He indulges in kick-boxing for some hours each week. “It helps me maintain equanimity and focus in every other aspect of my life.”
