With more and more women taking on leadership roles in the F&B industry, Hotelier India highlights the journey of Mousumi Sharma, the challenges faced by her over the past 12 years, her success mantras and more…

The trigger in F&B

“From childhood, I was inclined towards cooking and helping out my mother in cooking various recipes. That shaped up in the later years which grew my interest in this industry. Moreover, the work opportunities and the large scale exposure which this industry provides in terms of work culture and ethics somehow act as a catalyst for my desire to become a part of it.”

The challenges of being a woman in a male-dominated segment

“One of the major challenges is the perception of people when they doubt the capability of a woman to handle high-powered jobs and large scale challenges which is part of this industry. I have also faced it in some part of my working journey but I have proved the perception wrong with my sincerity and hard work.”

Gender bias – then and now

“I have been working in this industry for more than 12 years and I feel one of the major changes that has happened is I see more and more women handling senior jobs which shows the faith of companies on us and their belief that we can lead a team with equal ease and command just like our male counterparts.”

Key career highlights

“There have been many key highlights which have shaped my career of more than 12 years. But if I have to single-point some then that would be the management trusting me to run a huge team in a premier organization. I enjoy the diversity of the guests I deal, exploring opportunities for improvement, solving concerns and moving my people together as a team.”

Qualities needed for a successful F&B manager

“One of the foremost qualities for someone to be successful as an F&B manager is that one has to be able to absorb high work pressure and should be someone who can lead a team ensuring positive results in the end.”

My success mantras

“I would say my dedication to my work and quick learning skills, and using them for the benefit of my organization have helped me to be a successful F&B manager.”
