Power List 2018: Arun Saraf, MD, Juniper Hotels

Unassuming and a man of few words, Saraf prefers to be in the background and let his work speak instead. In this, he follows the footsteps of his father — Radhe Shyam Saraf, a born leader and the man who gave India’s hospitality industry a new perspective.

Ahead of his times and a man with exemplary vision, Radhe Shyam Saraf ensured that the very first of India’s luxury hotels was established in the early ’80s, when he brought the Hyatt brand to India with the construction of Hyatt Regency Delhi

“We are basically a hotel development and owning company, while Hyatt is the brand and management company for most of our hotels,” explains Saraf.

The company traces its origin to 1975, when it started its first property, Yak and Yeti Hotel in Kathmandu, Nepal, which finally came up in 1977. It is a primarily a hotel development and owning company. The one thing that sets this company of self-made entrepreneurs apart is the willingness to take risks – but calculated risks. While they have forayed into the development of resort and convention centre in Bodh Gaya, the grandfather-son-grandson trio work in complete harmony and believe in undertaking a thorough market research before embarking upon any new project.

The 401-room Andaz Delhi, a joint venture between a subsidiary of Hyatt Hotels and Juniper Hotels Pvt Ltd (JHPL) is their latest contribution to the world of Indian hospitality, and one they are proud to showcase. Hyatt’s subsidiary owns 50% of the hotel, while Saraf and family own the other 50%. This is the third hospitality business venture that JHPL has entered into with Hyatt. The other two properties that JHPL owns include Grand

Hyatt Mumbai and Hyatt Regency Ahmedabad. JHPL is part of Saraf Hotel Enterprises, the parent company of Asian Hotels, Robust Hotels, Unison Hotels, Chartered Hotels, etc.

Radhe Shyam Saraf is the group chairman and is assisted by his sons, Arun and Umesh, along with his grandson Varun in leading and managing his hotels and companies subcontinent-wide.

The company constantly strives to give maximum value to its shareholders and endeavours to be the leader. Each of their hotels is a sanctuary for guests.
