15 July as World Youth Skills Day was declared by United nations in 2014 to emphasize the importance of acquiring skills by young people in order to financially independent. The theme this year is “Learning and skills for life, work, and sustainable development”. World Youth Skills Day gives an opportunity to spread the importance of skilling to the younger generation as well as reskilling or upskilling of the current work force.
Tourism and Hospitality Skill Council (THSC) on the World Youth Skills Day will undertake the following activities:
1. Organise a one-hour face-to-face session with students at the training partner’s institute, talk about Skill ecosystem and employment scenario
2. Release a video message from Rajan Bahadur, CEO, THSC.
3. Testimonials from young students talking about how learning skills changed their lives.
4. School visits for awareness on importance of skill development, future growth and prospects in tourism and hospitality industry.
THSC’s focus is to create benchmark courses which are in step with the evolving needs of industry. We work with and for the industry to identify where the skill gap is and to address it through appropriate courses, curriculum, career support and other activities.
Some other initiatives are as below:
- High focus on Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) Programs. Over 6 lakhs+ informal workers have been certified under this.
- We have created 1000+ Training Centres for providing skill training to the urban and rural youth. Out of this, 150 Centres are offering student-funded programs that are directly linked with industry by providing employment or apprenticeship.
- To bridge the Skill Gap along with Demand Gap, since inception, THSC has achieved over 85% placement of certified candidates and continuous endeavour is to achieve or enhance the same
- We are working closely with Industry, Districts and Training Partners to understand the aspiration of local youth and train them in those job roles only
- Tribal youth are being mobilized for these programs in Left Wing Extremism (LWE) Districts
- Apprenticeship: THSC supports and extensively promotes Apprenticeship under NAPS, a scheme of Government of India. So far, THSC has registered over 1800 Industry units in apprenticeship, who have recruited over 23,000 candidates as apprentices in THSC job roles within their organisations.
- RTD: THSC has initiated Recruit-Train-Deploy model for the industry to further bridge the Demand-Supply Gap. This program has already been undertaken by a few Industry Partners, training over 5000 candidates in the next couple of years.
- BVoc: To offer skill programs under higher education, THSC has partnered with 130+ Universities to offer 3-Year degree programs. Every year, more than 4000 Undergraduate/Graduate students go through these programs. So far, more than 15,000 students have already been trained and certified. This year, we plan to add 30 more Universities and it is expected that more than 6000 students will undergo courses in these universities.
- Schools: Skilling curriculum is mandated for school students between class IX and XII so that students have a better outlook towards their future aspirations. Each year, more than 20,000 school students take up these courses and since inception, more than 90,000 candidates have already been certified.
